OKC Dentist talks about some potential signs for gum disease
Gum disease isn’t fun, as anyone who’s had it can tell you. A list of painful symptoms and thousands of dollars in dental work are just the tip of the painful iceberg. The OKC dentist is here to explain some potential signs of gum disease. Should you experience or see any of these signs, schedule an appointment with you dentist and confirm you actually have gum disease. With that said, here are some common symptoms to look for.
- Red, swollen, and painful gums
- Sores in the mouth
- loose teeth
- separating teeth
- A change in the way your teeth fit together when you close your mouth
- Bleeding while brushing, flossing, or eating hard food
- Receding and/or longer looking teeth
When testing for certain types of gum disease, your dentist or hygienist may take X-rays to check for any bone loss or other problems. Your dentist may also refer you to a Periodontist. Periodontists are experts in the identification and treatment of gum disease and may provide you with treatment options your dentist may not have access too.
Treating gum disease: The main goal of gum disease is to try and control the spread of the infection. Depending on the type and severity of the disease, different treatments may be used. Your dentist will also probably recommend you do more oral care at home. You may also have to quit certain activities, such as smoking, in order to maintain your oral health.
Good oral health starts with regular brushing and flossing. Maintaining good oral health can stop, or even reverse, tooth decay and gum disease.
